Today you will be learning everything about the game of Discus held at the Summer Olympics. We will talk about some rules and facts about Discus. You will also learn about all time Gold Medalist Al Oerter, and finally you will learn about the Discus and what it is made of.

The Discus is a rounded shaped disc. You are supposed to throw it as far as you can to get points. (The farther the better.)
Whie playing Discus you are not allowed to throw it like a frisbee. If you do throw it like a frsbee you will get disqualified, The Discus Disc is made of Wood, Stone, Iron, Bronze, Lead, or Plastic. If you lift the disc you will figure out that it weighs about 11 lbs. The Objective of Discus is to make the discus land near the marked area on the field. The diameter of the Disc is 219-221 mm. The equipment you need to play Discu is the Disc, cage, netting, and training. The field is circle that is 250 meters long. The athlete is allowed th use chalk to get a better grip on the disc.
Al Oerter
Al Oreter is the first Anerican thrower to reach 200 ft, but when he was 42 he reahed 240 ft for fun on ESPN that didn't count, but if it did he would have broken his old world record for Olympic Discus. He competed in olympic Discus between 1956 and 1968. He is best known as a consecutive gold medalist in 4 olympic games. Before the 1964 olympics he had internal bleeding and severe pain on his throwing side, and yet he still won a gold medal. In 2005 Al Oerter was introduced into the Nassau Couutny Sports Hall of Fame. He began his career at the 1956 sSummer Olympics in Melbourne.
How did Al Oerter show the Olympic Values
-Fair Play: He gave another Olympic competetor advice on how to throw the disc the right way.
-Joy of Effort: He participated many times, and when he lost he was still happy.
-Pursiut of Excellance: He won 4 gold medals.
